Picturing The Other-Doorway to Another World

All the pictures of Dennis are for my picturing the "other " assignment...as I approached a homeless man on one occasion and a interesting looking woman on another occasion and was refused both times. I think for the purposes of the assignment, that was enough of approaching someone I might not ordinarily feel comfortable approaching! And asking your photography professor, has its own level of intimidation, especially when he concurs with you that you are technologically challenged! But no, Dennis was quite gracious and helpful!
Dennis coached me in taking pictures closer. I find that the immediacy and intimacy in this one invites the viewer into this pensive place...

Duotone assignment

I wanted to play with making a cartoon out of this one....but I think I will play it safe and pick someone who isn't grading me!

Nike Ad: Catching Air

This is actually for my photojournalism assignment-catching the decisive moment, but I am getting very frustrated trying to download it into my new word press site, so before I walk away from it all, I thought I'd at least put it here-cause I like it, and I worked hard for it!

Imagine!

Can you imagine that this photo was taken in the middle of a bright and sunny afternoon? Today I learned some magic! Dennis had great patience with me as he observed my mind swim between the increasing numbers--> resulting in decreasing aperture sizes-->resulting in increasing depth of field...while decreasing shutter speed numbers-->result in increased amount of time that the shutter stays open-->which means decreased sharpness of image(in other words greater chance for blur should there be any movement)...and all the while trying to remember that Av numbers on my camera stood for aperture(also known as f-stop, just to make matters more confusing), and the Tv ones for shutter speeds...and then there is the matter of where the ISO is set at...not to mention source of light, framing, selective thirds...dare I go on?. My point being that as technologically challenged as I proved myself to be, I did manage to learn something. If anyone out there can relate to my experience of having all these increasing and decreasing factors create traffic jams in my brain's super highways, then I just want to say that in some ways the digital camera is our best friend...cause you can just set it on manual, and go along fooling around with all the settings, and get instant feedback about the resulting image. This photo was taken with the shutter speed at 4000, and the aperture at 6.3. And I have not messed with it in photoshop at all. I was so amazed by how it turned out !

Rasta Boy

I took this of my young friend.I felt this photo has a cultural and historical perspective, in that he wears his "tam" in honor of his cultural roots-covers his hair. He also shows off his Rastafarian colors, as well as a button speaking to the times we live in and his political message:No War.
